There are many reasons why we are happier as a string trio instead of a quartet, but the simplest answer is we don't really need a second violin! We have arranged all the standard repertoire to suit three instruments, and with the bright, singing sound of the violin, the warm, mellow tones of the viola supported by the robust bass from the cello, the trio can recreate the full sound of the string quartet without the fourth musician. It also means we take up less space (and cost less) than four players! Everyone's a winner!
